A great way to put moisture back into that dry, itchy skin is to do a regimen known as “soak and seal.” It has four steps:
Have a warm bath or shower (do this at least once a day), for about 10 minutes.
Use a gentle cleansing bar or body wash (they are not the same thing as soap!). Good brands to use are Dove, Cetaphil, Basis, Oilatum, Aveeno, Eucerin, and Oil of Olay. You want to choose “sensitive skin” preparations. While you have a severe flare-up, you might want to bathe or shower without using any cleansers.
Gently pat away the extra water using a towel. Don’t rub.
Immediately apply skin medication or moisturizer (good brands of moisturizers include Aquaphor ointment, Vanicream, CeraVe cream, Eucerin Crème Original or Calming, or Cetaphil cream) to damp skin. This seals in the moisture. Don’t apply moisturizers over any skin medications.
Nonsteroidal prescription creams like Atopiclair and Mimyx don’t have any age or length-of-use restrictions.
