Zinc plays an important role in production and storage of insulin. Some research shows that people who have type 2 diabetes have low levels of zinc due to decreased absorption and an increased excretion of zinc.
Some studies have found that cinnamon improves blood glucose control for those with type 2 diabetes. In the first study, 60 people that had type 2 diabetes got divided into six groups. Three groups had 1, 3 or 6 g of cinnamon a day and the three other groups consumed 1, 3 or 6 g of placebo capsules. After 40 days, all three of the doses of cinnamon greatly reduced fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol.
A bunch of preliminary studies show that the herb gymnema can probably lower the blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Because gymnema might lower blood sugar levels, people on medications for diabetes or those using insulin should not take gymnema unless they are being closely monitored by their doctor.
