Chordates (phylum Chordata) include                 Chordates

a hollow dorsal nerve cord (the
notochord), pharyngeal slits, a tail             Typical classes

The traditional classification of    ΚΚΚ Larvacea
vertebrates contains a wide variety  Subphylum Cephalochordata (lancelets)
of paraphyletic groups, which in     Subphylum Myxini (hagfish)
newer systems may either be          Subphylum Vertebrata (vertebrates)
abandoned or greatly extended. No    ΚΚΚ Petromyzontida (lampreys)
particular standard system has       ΚΚΚ Placodermi - extinct
developed yet, and the groups given  ΚΚΚ Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish)
at right should be considered        ΚΚΚ Acanthodii - extinct

   * Gnathostomata - jawed vertebrates
   * Lepidosauria - lizards and snakes
   * Lissamphibia - core amphibians
   * Osteichthyes - bony fish, consisting of ray-finned fish and lobe-finned
     fish, sometimes includes all Tetrapoda
   * Sarcopterygii - lobe-finned fish, consisting of coelacanths and
     lungfish, sometimes includes all Tetrapoda
   * Synapsida - mammals and extinct relatives
   * Tetrapoda - four-limbed vertebrates
